£200,000 slashed from energy bills

A scheme offering free insulation to pensioners in the Bradford district has so far helped them save an estimated £200,000 a year on their energy bills.

Bradford Council has set up the programme to provide people with cavity wall and loft insulation, called Community Warmth.

It is free to over 60s and people living in Council Tax band A or B may also be entitled to free cavity wall insulation, where possible.

The scheme is in partnership with EAGA and npower and is only available to homeowners and those in privately-rented accommodation.

Others who do not qualify for the free work, could benefit from the offer of heavily subsidised insulation.

It began in Ilkley and Wibsey in October and is expected to reach 170,000 households in the district over the next two years. So far 451 cavity walls and 778 lofts have been insulated.

In addition extra surveyors have been recruited, resulting in 22 new jobs. In addition there have already been 260 referrals to the national Warm Front scheme, where qualifying households can potentially access a £2,700 grant for heating measures – totalling £702,000.

Installing cavity wall insulation will reduce a home’s energy bills by £160 every year, while the correct amount of loft insulation will save up to £200.

Council leader Kris Hopkins said: “It is very good news for the Bradford district and the Council is proud to be playing the lead role on behalf of our residents.”

Councillor Adrian Naylor, executive member for regeneration, said: “The heavily subsidised price of £149 for measures is a small price to pay for peace of mind when using a tried and tested contractor backed by Bradford Council. The payback could be as little as one year to four years with savings guaranteed by the product life for more than 40 years.”

The Council has set aside £300,000 this year to pay for the scheme. Once agreed, the work is carried out by Community Warmth’s specialist contractors and is usually completed in less than a day.

Those who want to take advantage of the Council scheme should ring 0800 694 0418.

If anyone is in any doubt as to whether a salesman is part of Community Warmth or not, call the Council on (01274) 433556.

Well done Bradford Council, and I see they saved another £150,000 this year in dispensing with the post of Council Deputy Chief Executive....

Well the Warmfront Scheme......recently have had a replacement boiler and insulation done under this scheme for my Mother in York. A good scheme but be aware!!!! It seems that the work to be carried out ALWAYS exceeds the £2700 grant and everyone is then asked to pay an excess of £300-£850. My Mother was asked for an excess of £810 which after 2 phonecalls to the installer, without the need for any strenuous haggling was simply reduced to £260. To cut a long story short a quick google on "Warmfront" will show this scheme and particularly the dubious excess has been discussed/debated/ri
diculed so many times in the House of Commons, as a result of complaints and was the subject of a BBC documentary. So my advice to anyone who is thinking of having work done under this scheme, is to wait until the standard letter arrives from EAGA, then tell them the excess is ridiculous and negotiate !!. It took me so many letters to get a breakdown of costs, when I eventually did, the labout cost alone to fit a more efficient boiler and new immersion was £2500. The cost of raw materials I must admit was very fair at £900 for new boiler and extras.

I second peters post. The Warm Front scheam installers must be very warm this winter, judging by the extra £10 notes they charge to insulate their own pockets. Radio 4 did an expose' on them recently too on the show You and Yours, so always double check and possably get independant quotes. Shame on them as they target the elderly too.

On another note, perhapse InCommunities should be surveying and insulating their housing stock, instead of spending the rental income on changing their name every 18 months, at whatever cost that is. I thought the 'company' was suposed to be run for the benifit of the tennants, not the 'packaging' leaches. When is the T n A going to do a story about that fiasco? The T n A should also maybe do a survey about the repairs teams, despite the inhouse properganda InCommunities prints I think the truth from the users mouths would paint a very differeny picture. I for one have yet to have ANY dealings with them that havn't required a second visit to put right what was wrong in the first place or put right the mess made trying to fix it.
