Bradford’s newest knife crime deterrent is helping to kick-start a week of action in the city aimed at highlighting efforts to tackle crime and keep communities safe.

A knife arch is being set up at Bradford Interchange on Monday as part of national Not in my Neighbourhood Week.

The arch, which has already been used at Wibsey Fair, is similar to an airport metal detector.

Inspector Kevin Pickles, of the City ward Neighbourhood Policing Team, said violent crime was down by seven per cent in Bradford South and there had been a 24 per cent fall in possession of offensive weapons.

He said: “The arch is there to deter those few people who may consider carrying a weapon, and provide reassurance to law-abiding members of the public.”

A number of action days to clamp down on crime and grime are planned across the district. Resi-dents will be joining police, firefighters, Council and housing trust officers and community volunteers.

Police will target criminals on outstanding warrants and clamp down on drug dealers, and Council officers will clean streets and gullies and remove graffiti. Residents will be given free crime prevention advice, fire safety checks and smoke alarms.

Police will be looking to crack down on anti-social behaviour in Jer Lane and Ascot Drive, Wibsey, and Wyke. Officers will be joining councillors to meet residents on the streets.

Chief Inspector Paul Hepworth, in charge of Bradford South NPTs, said the same sort of action was being taken “day in, day out, and week in, week out”. He said: “NPTs are starting to take effect in the district.

“Crimes are coming down and customer satisfaction is going up. We are listening to what people say, reading about their concerns in the T&A and identifying the issues and tackling them.

“We are trying to reduce the gap between the fear of crime and actual crime. I would like people’s perception to be where the reality is.”

Why publicise it ?

OK it might be a deterrent but they are never going to catch anyone unless they are totally thick !!

but people who carry knives and weapons in public are "totally thick"!!!

its like the capture cars , people say why tell public about them , but some silly thick idiots still go and get caught in them .. doh!!!!!!

They dont tell you where these capture cars are they put up a sign in certain area to put people off breaking into cars.
With this they tell you the day and time and place so people who carry blades will just keep away that day
It dont make sense

I read once these arches are voluntary. Is that still the case? You can probably see these things from about 200ft away so anyone carrying a weapon will just avoid them.

I suppose it's an alternative to the paperwork required for a stop and search.

oddly enough i know someone who was mugged in broad daylight in the city center this morning when someone held a knife to his throat. he can't be bothered to report it as he knows nothing will be the likely outcome.

Surely the time has come to eccept the likely cause of ant-social behaviour as apposed to the effect. The charity National Society for Children and Family Contact (NSCFC) warns Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and arch-feminist Harriet Harman that until such time as the government brings about reform and equality in family law, the like of which at present excludes wholesome fathers, grandparents and all on the paternal side of a child’s life after separation or divorce at an alarming rate and affecting in excess of 700.000 children, fathers and well over One million grandparents all since Labour took office in 1997, then its for sure that many youngsters seeking a sense of identity and belonging will turn to gangs and so will continue the never ending rise in anti-social behaviour. Add to this the mindless creation of a nanny state via the NSPCC who strongly and openly appose the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Social Services and CAFCASS at the expense of Parental Responsibility Rights and we have the complete recipe for disaster and with it still more out of control behaviour the like of which is manifesting itself in knife and sex crime with increasing numbers of youngsters suffering from mental illness. Address the cause and just maybe we can begin to replace gangs with good wholesome role models via the family unit, to ignore a child’s innate need to belong and be loved is to reap what we sow and this the church also has a God-given duty to convey without fear or favour. yes indeed. a follow up to inspector pickles and his safe messages.

The machine has its benefits but how many can avoid travelling through the exchange?

its not like an airport is it where you have to go through specified areas amd then all are screened.

bring back good old fashioned coppering and you will dela with it.

Incidentally:when are the police going to protect innocent drivers and pedestrians from untaxed etc vehicles!!!!

However, as I recall they did publicise the use of one at the Wibsey fair and three guys still got pulled by the police manning the arch. What I didn't understand about that particular story was that one of them claimed that all the weapons were his, so even though the other two were carrying them, only he was charged..?! What on earth were the officers thinking?

agreed:carrying is the offence not ownership!!

did they not know they were carrying and was teh owner planning to use three knives at a time for himself!!

A police C**K up: if they are serious about cutting down knife use enforse the law or were they worried about arresting three and getting tied up in all the red tape:if so no point is there.!
