A top regional development official has dubbed Bradford’s former Odeon cinema a “crap building” and says it should be demolished .

Don Stewart, strategy director at Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency which owns the Odeon, told more than 100 of the city’s property professionals that that development of the site would eventually go ahead, but the current economic climate had put a block on speculative development.

Mr Stewart, who lives in Bradford, told the Bradford Property Forum that Yorkshire Forward was holding on to the Odeon site to prevent another developer stepping in and spoiling the proposed masterplan for the city centre.

He said the Park at the Heart scheme was vital to ensure future economic regeneration and would include high quality offices, of which there was a shortage in Bradford.

He said: “The simple fact is that Yorkshire Forward is holding the Odeon site in order to protect the masterplan of which it forms an important part.

“My personal view is that it is a crap building and should be pulled down.”

Although the Bradford economy was continuing to perform better than some other areas, it would be affected by a complete shutdown of speculative development in the region due to the credit crunch and economic slowdown.

He said there was a potential deal to develop the site but, like most speculative proposals around the region, this was back on the table for renegotiating like the majority of speculative property deals due to changed economic conditions.

The meeting also heard a “grovelling apology” from Yorkshire Minister Rosie Winterton for her failure to mention Bradford’s achievements in a speech to a recent international business conference where she sang the praises of other regional cities.

She said: “I apologise for the omission and am aware of the many good things that are happening in the city.”

The Minister said Terry Rooney, MP for Bradford North, had suggested that that in future Leeds should be referred to as “east Bradford”.

After the meeting John Pennington, of the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group, which has drawn up its own plans to refurbish the building, criticised Mr Stewart’s remarks about the Odeon.

“He obviously doesn’t understand the strength of feeling in Bradford,” he said.

“I think when the public of Bradford are volunteering to take part in the regeneration of their own city, it’s something to be highly commended not something that is to be responded to by counter-productive comments and a wall of silence.”

Would this be the same Don Stewart who, at a North Lincolnshire Area Council meeting 'felt that the democratically elected members were too isolated when making their decisions and called their democratic accountability into question would like to see more open debates incorporated into the decision making process...'??

Hmmm. Perhaps he'd like to follow his own advice sometime. I'm with JP on this one - the general public want a say in the regeneration of their own city and Bradford Council, Yorkshire Forward and BCR have repeatedly ignored the wishes of Bradford's citizens. The arrogance of these so-called 'public' bodies is only matched by their unpopularity.
Don Stewart is apparently one of the founders of Yorkshire Forward. Now, as I understand it, as an unelected member of an exclusive group, I'd dearly love to know what gives him the right to pass any comment on the future of our city. Oh, he LIVES here!
Well guess what, matey, so do the rest of us!

Yes, the quicker it is knock down the better. It's a waste of space. And as for John Pennington who is a so called " Businessman and entrepreneur" and the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group drawing up plan to save it, people need to remember what has happened to what was called the "Penningtons Nightclub" on Manningham Lane, he doesn't care about it now as he has made big money out of it! Remember when Mr Pennington involved he is out to line is own pockets.

The Odeon has been allowed to become "crap" due to the highly paid professional nondescripts that Bradford Council have employed over the years (at vastly inflated salaries) to knock one of Bradford's historic buildings yet again , until we have a modern concrete nonentity as a City Centre . Look at what Leeds have achieved with its "old buildings" & created a City Centre that can be identified as Leeds & not any "same-as" City Centre , eg , Milton Keyes . These experts will leave this area once they have taken as money as they can & leaving Bradford as a surburb of somewhere !

all well and good trying to save the space for 'the masterplan' but when is it going to happen? Do we have to wait for ten years looking at 'crap' buildings?

Im sure lots of people agree that; we don't care what happens, lets just have something happen now!

Yorkshire Forwards aparent reason for "holding on" to the Odeoon is comendable if they are indeed wanting to ensure the cities Masterplan is brought to fruition. However, how does BORGs proposal prevent this from happening exactly? No genuine explanation given for this!

I'm not going to be biased towards BORG, and with all due respect to BORG, this building isn't that amazing. I've watched all the BORG videos and I must commend them on their efforts for highlighting the more positive aspects to the Odeon, but these are very few and far between now (sadly).

I would also like to add that they are the voice of a 'certain section' of the Bradford population (and it should be taken seriously) but that does not make it the majority view. BORG should not get caught up in claiming they speak for the entire Bradford public as quite clearly they don't.

I would love to see the retention of the towers (like the proposed BORG scheme) but I also love the idea of a public square surrounded by restaurants, bars and cafe's etc (like the YF scheme). It would add something desperately lacking in the west end of the city.

I'm quite happy to see either scheme delivered as they are both quality projects. The most important thing out of all this is that a high quality scheme actually gets built sometime soon. With the credit crunch this seems unlikely!

True, it's a crap building and has no architectural merit.

No chance at all of that, what with the current financial situation.

If Yorkshire Forward's plan does eventually go ahead, they will put apartments and office blocks there, but, people cannot get mortgages at the moment, so, ultimately we will be left with another disused building. (We already have many of them.) Surely, with this in mind we will be better off letting BORG do what they want to do, so the building will be used for what it was designed to be, a concert venue with the peripherals planned.
