Coast trip is memorial to doctor

A day trip to Bridlington in memory of the late Dr Urmila Gupta is being organised for the second year running.

The trip is for her former elderly patients and elderly patients currently registered at Manningham Medical Centre and is being organised by her brother Jitendra Gupta.

Kind-hearted doctor Urmila Gupta spent 43 years in medicine and ran her Manningham practice in Green Lane for 36 years after coming to Bradford in 1968.

Dr Gupta devoted her life to caring for her patients until she died of lung cancer, aged 71, in February 2007, less than a year after retiring.

In April 2008 she was posthumously awarded a community harmony award for services to the community by Bradford Council.

She was especially well-known for treating her hundreds of elderly patients to seaside excursions, which she paid for and organised herself. Her legacy is being carried on by her brother. Last year, with the help of Mumtaz, Morrisons and Bradford and Airedale tPCT, a group enjoyed a trip to Blackpool.

This year Bombay Stores in Shearbridge Road, Bradford, has offered to share the cost of the trip in her memory.

A 78-seater double-decker bus will leave from outside Green Lane Post Office at 9.30am on Saturday, July 26. Places on the trip are limited and will be given on a first come first served basis.
