TWO adults and their child had to flee their home late last night after their car caught fire and spread to their house.

Fire crews from Stanningley and Bradford were called to the blaze in Victoria Road, Pudsey, at 11.38pm.

A Peugeot 206's engine compartment had caught fire due to an electrical fault, and as the car was parked around one metre from the house, the fire had spread to the front door.

Watch Commander Anthony Devine, from Stanningley fire station, said the family all managed to escape safely.

He said: "There was just damage to the front door and smoke throughout the house.

"They had working smoke detectors which alerted them to the fire."

Mr Devine said the fire should act as warning to people trying to repair their own cars.

"The man had been trying to repair his own car, and that's what cause the issue, so you should always get a professional to work on repairing your car."

The crews used two hose reels and one breathing apparatus to fight the fire, and the man suffered smoke inhalation and was transferred to hospital by ambulance.
