HUNDREDS of people attended a poignant fundraising event to mark the first anniversary of the death of a father-of-two.

Hamid Musa died of a heart condition on March 10 last year aged 52 and his family chose to hold an event in Lister Park on Saturday in his memory.

Mr Musa and his wife, Kareemaa met at Foto Processing in Bradford, where they both worked, and moved to Barnsley in 1996 and have two daughters, Hannah, 13, and Ayaana, eight.

Mrs Musa said he was diagnosed with the heart condition around six years ago and they were determined to enjoy their time together.

The fundraising appeal they have launched is called Hamid’s Helping Hands which aims to raise funds for the Penny Appeal, to help the world’s most poor and needy children.

It hopes to provide clean water, food and shelter and also hopes to look at bigger projects including building schools.

More than £4,400 has been raised on the charity’s online fundraising page to date with a target of £10,000.

Mr Musa, who was originally from Kenya, was described as a “loving, caring husband and daddy who was passionate about helping the poor to eliminate poverty around the world”.

The fundraising day was held on Saturday at Lister Park, Manningham, with people travelling from the Midlands and South Yorkshire to take part.

Mrs Musa, Hannah and Ayaana all made emotional speeches at the event, also attended by Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Abid Hussain, and Bradford Council deputy leader, Cllr Imran Khan. Hannah said: “My dad was only here for 12 years of my life, but I feel blessed and I have so many memories of him.

“He was loving and caring and passionate about eliminating poverty in the world.”

Mrs Musa said: “This event will help us move forward and give my daughters confidence.

“We have made this day a positive day to help children who need it. Today is amazing. Hamid’s true success in life was with people; he could make them smile.

“I want my girls to grow up and understand that there are children more needy than them and to help them.”

A 5k walk around Lister Park, called ‘A Walk for Daddy' was also held. Go to justgiving.com/fundraising/hamidshelpinghands to donate.
