WEST Yorkshire Police has been rated "good" for its efforts to treat people fairly and with respect.

A new report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services gave the force the same good rating it got last year.

It looks at issues like stop and search and how "ethical and fair" the force is.

The Police Legitimacy Report says: "“West Yorkshire Police is judged to be good at how legitimately it keeps people safe and reduces crime. For the areas of legitimacy we looked at this year, our overall judgment is the same as last year.

"The force is good at treating all of the people it serves with fairness and respect. It is also good at ensuring its workforce behaves ethically and lawfully and it is good at treating its workforce with fairness and respect.”

It adds: "The force has provided training in unconscious bias to all frontline officers as part of stop and search training.

"Our review of misconduct files showed that the force generally identifies potential allegations of discrimination, but there is still room for improvement."

West Yorkshire Chief Constable Dee Collins (pictured) said: “The report recognises the strategic approach we take to issues such as stop and search and use of force, along with our commitment to ethical and lawful behaviour.

“I am committed to ensuring these are principles which are embedded in West Yorkshire Police’s culture, as it is vital that we treat our own officers and staff in a way that, in turn, we expect them to treat members of the public."

“The report also recognises the work we have done to recruit and retain more people from a BAME background and while we continue to face significant financial challenges, I am keen to ensure that we maintain a focus on improving diversity and inclusion going forward, continuing to build an organisation which is even more representative of the communities it serves.”

West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns Williamson added: "In really challenging times this is a very positive report and a great reflection on the work being done internally and externally to ensure our communities are safer and feel safer which is the overall vision set out in the Police and Crime Plan.”
