RESIDENTS on a Bradford street are refusing to give up their fight for permit parking despite their petition on the issue being thrown out by councillors.

Members of the Bradford West Area Committee dismissed a 38-signature petition calling for a permit scheme to be introduced on Naples Street in the Manningham area of the city, despite hearing concerns over “dangerous” and “double” parking on the street.

The committee was told by officers that “it would not be usual practice to introduce permit parking on a single street as this would merely transfer any problem from one street to another”.

Members took no action on the petition, instead requesting increased passing patrols by Council wardens and police. Lead campaigner Imran Hussain said that as a result, he was now planning to re-submit the petition.

He said: “We need permit parking and the suggestions from the Council mean they are not willing to address the issue. What angers me is that the advice was to encourage residents to report matters to the police, which is not practical as they have more important things to deal with and it can take a few days for them to patrol the street.”

Mr Hussain also said the full length of the street was not patrolled by Council officers, to which a Council spokesman responded: “There is a short length of Naples Street with double yellow lines where the road meets Whetley Lane. We patrol these currently but will increase our patrols based on the recommendations of the Bradford West Area Committee and report back on what difference this has made.”
