ORGANISERS of the Queensbury 1940s Day have issued a fresh appeal for volunteers to come forward to ensure the event can be enjoyed by the village for years to come.

The popular day, which is filled with entertainment, music, stalls, army and display vehicles and featured a Spitfire flypast last year, began in 2014 and has grown since then.

But organisers are encouraging new people to come on board ahead of the group’s AGM in two weeks’ time.

Next year’s event is already planned and those currently involved say they will offer support to people willing to take it on.

Committee chairman Stuart Walker said: “We’re still needing volunteers – myself and four other people are leaving the committee this year – so for it go forward we need others.

“The majority of the arrangements are already in place so it’s going to be quite an easy transition period for them.

“If we get people to come to one of the meetings, they can see what it’s all about and if they like what they see they can come and join us.”

Mr Walker added he would be “rather disappointed” in the community if the day was forced to fold through a lack of volunteers.

He added: “We started with no cash, but we’ve now got enough money in the bank to put on this next year’s event without a problem.”

There were fears the next event could be in jeopardy after a low fence was put up around the green, Chapel Street, where the majority of the day’s attractions are held.

Military vehicles and fairground rides are parked there as part of the day, but the committee raised concerns the fence would prevent this from happening. However, organisers have been in touch with ward councillors and a meeting has been organised with representatives from Bradford Council to ensure the event will not be affected.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: “The fencing has only been put on two sides of the grassed area after complaints from local residents about people parking there.

“The organisers of the 1940s event will still be allowed to use it when the event returns in June next year. We have arranged a meeting to discuss how the organisers can still have the access that they need and that the area can be kept clear of parked cars for the rest of the year. The organisers have no reason to be concerned.”

The AGM will be held at the George III pub, Chapel Street, Queensbury on Monday, October 9, from 6.30pm.
