TRAGIC Bradford schoolboy Asad Khan – found hanged in his bedroom – will be remembered at a special event in City Park the day before the first anniversary of his death.

The 11-year-old’s family will be at tomorrow’s anti-bullying event, which has been organised by Bradford mental health charity Sharing Voices and Bradford martial arts club Onna Ju-Jitsu.

Half a dozen schools from across the city have signed up to take part in the day, which will include the chance to join in a martial arts class and other well-being activities.

An inquest into Asad’s death at his home in Tile Street, Whetley Lane, is set to start at Bradford’s Coroners’ Court on October 16 after six pre-inquest reviews. It is expected to last four to five days.

Asad’s family walked out of the fifth pre-inquest review last month saying they felt “insulted” after Bradford Coroner Martin Fleming refused to consider evidence they believe to be vital, but which he has described as “speculative” and not directly relevant to Asad and his state-of-mind the day he died.

Mr Fleming has said the inquest was not a public inquiry and only had a limited scope. He said it would not be addressing any issues of bullying unrelated to Asad, and it would be the same with any issues around an alleged choking/fainting game, of which previous hearings had been told.

Asad’s father Mahmood Asif will speak at City Park to urge children to look out for one another. The event runs from 1pm to 3pm. Onna Ju-Jitsu expert Sensei Mumtaz Khan and her team will demonstrate Ju-Jitsu techniques and teach young people to be confident and learn to defend themselves.

Sensei Mumtaz Khan, who was named Bradford Inspirational Woman of 2014 in the Sports Category, has had first-hand experience of being bullied. She said: “As an adult I was bullied within the workplace and know how it affected me. I lost hair, weight and my health really suffered both physically and mentally. For a young child to be bullied, the burden is too much to bear.”

Bradford City Clinical Commissioning group will also be represented at the event encouraging young people to stay well.
