A 22-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for his part in an attack which left a police officer’s brother with fractures to his face and skull.

The violence in Centenary Square last September was captured on CCTV and showed Stephen Imeson being felled by a punch from an unknown attacker.

Witnesses described Mr Imeson as “crumpling” to the ground and prosecutor Jessica Strange said it was clear he was unconscious at that stage.

But as the complainant lay on the ground Foyaz Miah, who had earlier been arguing with door staff, kicked him in the head causing one of the fractures to his face.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday how Miah then ran off, but he returned to the scene and knocked over a woman who was trying to help Mr Imeson.

Miah made another attempt to get at his victim, but the complainant’s brother managed to get his body in the way.

Miss Strange told the court how the brothers had been out with friends when off-duty officer, Tony Imeson, tried to calm the situation between Miah and the door staff.

But Miah became aggressive towards the off-duty officer and another unknown male then punched Tony Imeson from behind.

Miss Strange said it was as Stephen Imeson and Miah were “squaring up” to each other that the complainant was also punched to the head. As a result of the attack Stephen Imeson suffered two facial fractures and a fracture to the skull which meant he had to stay in hospital for more than two weeks.

In his victim impact statement, he said he had to have a metal plate inserted in his cheekbone and described himself as having been “disfigured for life” because of the damage to his cheek and lower eyelid. The married complainant said he was off work for four months, had been seeing an occupational therapist and now had reduced vision in his right eye. Miss Strange said someone else, who had never been traced, was involved in the attack and not all of the injuries could be laid at Miah’s door.

Miah, of Mill Street, Bradford, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm on the basis that he was responsible for one of the facial fractures.

Jailing Miah for 27 months, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC said Miah’s actions were “truly incomprehensible” and added that it was a “very ugly incident indeed.”
