Increased security measures are being introduced at all Bradford Council buildings to ensure their safety and the safety of staff, it was announced this morning.

Meanwhile, armed police officers could be seen on patrol during the Minute's Silence held in Centenary Square this morning.

The extra measures mean there will only be one point of entry at City Hall, other buildings in Bradford city centre such as Britannia House, Sir Henry Mitchell House, and Margaret McMillan Tower, and town halls in Keighley, Shipley, Bingley and Ilkley.

The Council said a security guard will be placed at these access points and visitors will have their bags searched, including those attending weddings and registrations at Bradford City Hall.

Kersten England, Chief Executive of Bradford Council, said: "These measures have been taken in light of the ongoing critical threat level. The Government raised the security level at all Government buildings throughout the country from severe to critical earlier this week following the devastating bombing incident in Manchester on Monday evening.

"I am sure customers will understand the need for these measures to increase their safety and their co-operation will be greatly appreciated."

Visitors need to be aware that they may also have their bags searched at other public buildings where security will also be tightened.

Bradford City Hall Registry Office entrance will be open before 8.15am and from 5.15pm until 9pm as a single point of entry. Between the times of 8.15am until 5.15pm people can access City Hall only through the main reception.

Other Council buildings will be open during normal office hours.
