NEW styling and a more refined driving experience are among the improvements to the Mitsubishi Outlander.

And progress of this kind is vital in the competitive SUV crossover segment, where the competition doesn’t stand still for long.

The flexibility of the Outlander is among its most endearing features.

On the one hand, it’s a vehicle that can seat up to seven people comfortably and with no shortage of leg room.

On the other hand, you can fold the second and third row of seats if you need to load up bulky luggage, or things such as bicycles.

And the Outlander serves up this internal space despite the fact its footprint is smaller than that of most family estate cars.

The Outlander comes with just one engine option – Mitsubishi’s high-tech 2.2-litre Clean Diesel engine.

And it’s a very impressive unit, offering excellent acceleration for such a sizeable machine.

The six-speed automatic gearbox allows for smooth transmissions and a relaxed driving experience.

The steering feels weighty and accurate, while body roll in the tighter corners is not as noticeable as you might expect.

The ride is more stable than on previous versions of the Outlander, thanks to a series of ride and handling modifications to the MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension.

Changes also include front suspension cross-member reinforcement, front shock absorber retuning, rear suspension spring rate and damping changes, as well as the inclusion of larger shock

In terms of looks, the Outlander diesel looks purposeful and imposing. Aesthetically-pleasing features include the LED headlamps and a sleek radiator grille.

Meanwhile, the 18-inch alloy wheels make the vehicle more eye-catching.

Inside the cabin, levels of refinement have been greatly improved thanks to work to reduce noise.

Indeed, Mitsubishi has implemented no fewer than 40 measures to reduce levels of noise, vibration and harshness.

Its engineers then went to great lengths to test if these measures had worked properly, even placing microphones on the Outlander’s suspension before driving it on uneven road surfaces.

The dashboard has a simple design and is built from high-quality materials.

The steering wheel controls and easy-to-read instrument displays bring a strong sense of clarity.

Meanwhile, the comfortable seats are sculpted from leather, have increased padding and feature attractive silver stitching - another nice touch.

A new floor console and console box illumination help to complete the pleasant feel of the cabin. To prove it has paid attention to detail, Mitsubishi has even included a folder in which to keep your sunglasses!

In terms of its proportions, the latest Outlander is 4cm longer than its predecessor, which helps to account for the great feeling of space inside.

The cargo capacity in a seven-seat Outlander with two people on board is 1,608 litres – or 2,830 pints.

Despite its extra luxury, the Outlander continues to have solid, safe and robust credentials.

Indeed, the vehicle, has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating thanks to features such as City Crash Provision and Mitsubishi’s RISE safety system as standard. Seven airbags enhance driver and passenger safety further still.

Would-be buyers have eight colour schemes to choose from: granite brown, frost white, pearl white, cool silver, Atlantic grey, orient red, tanzanite blue and amethyst black.

All in all, the Outlander remains a practical vehicle but one that offers a good level of comfort and luxury too.

1. THE OUTLANDER RANGE

Four trims

The Mitsubishi Outlander is perfect for a whole range of customers thanks to a range of four generous trim

specifications.

Outlander Commercial: For businesses that need to shift loads but don’t necessarily require the full capability of

an LCV, the Outlander Commercial variant is just the job. It is bristling with clever technology such as auto rain and

dusk sensors, Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC), Auto Stop & Go (AS&G), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and an

adjustable speed limiter. Cruise control comes as standard, as does dual-zone climate control, and there’s a radio/

CD/MP3 player with six speakers and front electric windows. Airbags and 16-inch steel wheels also feature, as well as

practical roof rails. The Outlander also has an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, LED daytime running lights and a pocket

for a pair of sunglasses.

Outlander 2: Seen as the entry-level Outlander for private buyers, this model comes fully loaded with equipment

perfect for potential purchasers. It boasts the same levels of equipment as the Outlander Commercial.

Outlander 3: Moves the game on with newly introduced Electronic Parking Brake and Brake Auto Hold (automatic

only). It also comes with a third row of full seats for optimum comfort and convenience. They split and fold with

exceptional ease and the second row has a sliding function. In addition there’s dual-zone air conditioning, front fog

lamps, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding door mirrors, a door mirror turn lamp, a high-contrast, colour LCD display,

leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, Bluetooth hands-free with steering-mounted controls, privacy glass

and silver roof rails.

Outlander 4: New to the Outlander 4 are a heated steering wheel (3 spoke), LED front fog lamps, Blind Spot Warning

and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Electronic Parking Brake and Brake Auto Hold (automatic only), and a 360? camera.

Outlander 4 also adds leather upholstery, a heated and electric driver’s seat, LED headlights, Mitsubishi Multi

Communication System with sat nav and rear-view camera, headlamp washer, anti-trapping electric sunroof, chrome

beltline trim, optional automatic transmission with paddle shift and DAB radio and powered tailgate.

2. DESIGN

Designed to appeal

Outlander offers style and substance – and it’s a car where beauty is definitely more than skin-deep. A good-looking

vehicle, appealing and imposing, the Outlander is designed to make the most of the advanced engineering contained

within, resulting in a car that’s easy on the eye from the outside and attractively laid out inside.

A well-thought-out range of enhancements has been made to the car, such as a new floor console, shark fin antenna,

front foot lamps and console box illumination.

Models from Outlander 3 upwards come with new Electronic Parking Brake and Brake Auto Hold (automatic only), as

well as 18-inch alloys and eye-catching silver roof rails.

Whether through its high flanks, raised beltline, uncluttered surfaces, strong shouldering or soft-contoured bumpers,

the Outlander offers a reassuring sense of quiet protection and safety to its occupants. It is a car of substance, devoid

of cheap styling thrills and designed for the sort of long-haul travelling that its innovative powertrain will allow. Yes, it’s

a big car, but it manages to look and feel dynamic, whether through the aforementioned soft contouring or through the

elegant shoulder lines that seem to stretch its profile.

The same applies to the styling at the rear – where horizontal trim between the rear lamps adds visual width, giving

the car a distinctive, planted stance. Understated yet assertive, Outlander’s exterior design is further enhanced by a

slim front aerodynamic grille with stylish hockey-stick-shaped chrome strips and sculpted wrap-around headlamps.

Previously, the washer nozzles were placed under the back edge of the bonnet to prevent freezing, and a large plastic

plate was added on the underside of the engine to improve aerodynamics beneath the vehicle. Outlander really is a

smooth operator!

3. ON THE INSIDE

Just as its exterior design suggests style and substance, new Outlander’s interior takes the driver and passengers

to a world where quality comes first.

Clever second-row seats

The second row of seating has a flip-up cushion and folding backrest, allowing for a 1.71m-long floor when the second

and third rows of seats are folded down. Meanwhile, the second-row seats slide over a 250mm range and provide

plenty of space for the third-row passengers on seven-seat versions. The second row also features an easy-to-use,

sliding ‘walk-in’ function for the rearmost passengers.

Practical third-row seating

The third row of seats offers the rearmost passengers a relaxing and comfortable journey. Third-row occupants in the

current model benefit from properly-sprung seats – a boon on long journeys. There is a simple ‘fold & stow’ operation

and they even split-fold in a 50-50 fashion, aiding practicality.

Quieter and refined

Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has worked hard to make the Outlander’s cabin a quiet and relaxing place to be. With an

existing reputation for having a well-insulated, peaceful interior, road noise is suppressed by top-grade tyres, clever

suspension tuning and architecture, and well-thought-out positioning of sound-proofing materials.

Outlander’s engine-mounting system and the exhaust muffler help reduce engine noise, while finely-tuned

aerodynamics, efficient sealing around the door mirror base, door seals and thicker glass all help to reduce wind

noise.

Equipment

The next-generation Outlander boasts the Mitsubishi Multi Communication System with an intuitive minimal layout.

The start-up time is only 15 seconds. In addition, the rear power door has been designed to open high up for easier

access.

Automatic Stop & Go system

The latest generation of AS&G is equipped with an ‘Intelligent Battery Sensor’ providing continuous operation by

precise monitoring of the battery-charging status. And it’s even clever enough to tell you how long you were stationary

for on your journey.

Transmissions

Two gearboxes are available with the Outlander:

Six-speed manual

The six-speed manual gearbox has been developed with lower emissions in mind, but not at the cost of driving

dynamics. The six-speed transmission has a number of points to recommend it:

l The fourth, fifth and sixth gear ratios have been optimised for better fuel economy, and the slide bearings have been

placed on the shift control shaft and the shift rail to reduce friction and wear.

l There’s triple-synchromesh engineering on first, second and third gears, and double synchro on fourth gear has

been adopted to improve the shifting quality.

l Second, third and sixth gear teeth surfaces have benefited from a honing treatment to reduce gear noise. And to

be extra environmentally friendly, the six-speed gearboxes use technologically-advanced chromium and zinc-free

materials.

INVECS-II six-speed automatic

Also available is a conventional six-speed automatic gearbox, with the following benefits:

l An automatic gearbox will offer much wider applications for all global markets.

l A hydraulic torque converter-equipped system such as this will provide drivers with smoother operation, especially in

markets where the all-terrain capabilities of the vehicle are paramount.

l Consistent with the overall brief, the current six-speed automatic transmission is very clean:
