A PROPERTY in Manningham suffered extensive damage after a firework was thrown through a window.

Just after 9pm yesterday (Wednesday) fire crews from Fairweather Green and Shipley were called to reports of a fire at a three-storey terraced property on the corner of Heaton Road and Milford Place.

The blaze started when the firework landed on a sofa. The sofa was soon totally consumed by flames, and the blaze soon spread around the house.

Both the ground floor and first floor suffered fire damage while the second floor was smoke damaged.

There was no-one in the property at the time.

Fire crews visited neighbouring houses to make sure it had not spread.

They were at the scene for three hours.

Police are now appealing to anyone who might have seen who caused the fire, or saw anyone messing with fireworks in the area at the time.

Fairweather Green Watch Commander Peter Hanson said: "Because it was a terrace we checked out the neighbouring properties to make sure they were okay.

"There is a massive danger if people put fireworks through letterboxes or windows. This incident shows how much damage they can cause.

"It is also very important houses have smoke alarms fitted, especially at this time of year."

The insides of the house are extensively damaged.

A Spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "The property, which was unoccupied, had suffered damage to its living room and elsewhere.

A crime of arson has been recorded and at this stage it is believed the fire may have been caused by a firework.
