PLANS for dozens of new homes in three areas of the district will go before a planning committee this week.

All three schemes are recommended for approval, with planning officers saying new housing is badly needed in the district.

The first to be considered is a controversial application by Arncliffe Homes to build 14 houses on a triangular field on the A65 Bradford Road in Burley-in-Wharfedale, by the disused Otley-Ilkley railway line.

Previous plans to build 10 homes on the same plot had been withdrawn and reworked.

But Burley Parish Council and Shipley MP Philip Davies are among many who object to the scheme.

Both Mr Davies and the parish council have raised concerns about the risk of flooding and have said the plot falls outside of the development boundary of the Burley neighbourhood plan.

The parish council has also noted that no affordable housing is planned.

Fifty letters of objection have been received in total.

But in a report by officers, it says the previous plan for 10 homes was not considered to be enough, “given the scarce supply of housing land available in this part of the district”.

It says as a result, the developer had revised the scheme, which should now be approved.

Meanwhile, in Bradford, applicant S Chohan is also seeking full planning permission to build 14 homes on land at 407 Little Horton Lane.

The narrow parcel of land is home to a disused medical centre.

The scheme’s architects have said there is a “strong demand for large family homes” in the area.

But Bradford Trident Community Council has objected to the scheme, saying it will worsen the area’s traffic and parking problems.

Sixteen objection letters have been received in total.

And at Thackley, applicant Ruth Yeadon is seeking outline permission to build around 10 homes on land to the rear of 589 Leeds Road.

The land is the former car park and beer garden of the old Shoulder of Mutton pub, which has itself been given planning consent to be changed into a house.

Six objection letters and a 32-name petition have been sent to the planning department.

The Regulatory and Appeals committee meets at City Hall at 10am on Thursday.
