A POLICE crackdown on dangerous driving in Bradford will be featured on a national television programme.

Film crews from Channel Five are spending time with officers from Operation Steerside, ahead of Traffic Cops being broadcast in the autumn.

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who leads Steerside, said the crews would be with the police until Friday, July 8.

“They knew about the operation and asked to go out with officers,” said Sgt Buchan. “I think it is raising its profile even further. The Telegraph & Argus is doing a great job of raising the profile, and going on television will help even more.

“It will send the message out nationally what we are doing. I don’t think Steerside is unique, I think other forces do similar things every so often.

“But I think Steerside is the only one that is 24/7 – it is continuous.”

Police yesterday released the latest weekly figures for the Steerside campaign.

Among them was an arrest for robbery after a carjacking in Bradford city centre.

A 33-year-old man suffered minor bruising when he was dragged from his car on Hall Ings by two men described as Asian and aged in their 20s. One of them stole his black Vauxhall Vectra, while the other drove off in a white BMW that was later found on Leeds Road, Bradford.

One of the suspects was about 5ft 10ins, of medium build, with short dark hair, and wearing jeans and a red or maroon polo shirt. The other man was between 5ft 8ins and 5ft 10ins, of medium build, with short dark hair, and wearing jeans.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and bailed, but police still want to hear from any witnesses to the incident. Contact Detective Constable Imran Haider on 101.

The latest weekly Steerside total was 161, made up of 63 drivers speeding, 20 using a mobile phone at the wheel, 53 not wearing a seatbelt, 14 driving without insurance, and 11 other offences.

A total of 15 vehicles were seized, including a Nissan Almera that was snared because the man driving it had not transferred his insurance from his old car to his new one.
