BRADFORD College has celebrated the success of its students, staff and organisations at the annual Students’ Union awards ceremony.

The event recognises achievements across areas including teaching, volunteering, leadership and sport, and looks at the work people have done for the college and Bradford as a whole.

Nominations for staff awards came from students, and both staff and students put in nominations for the student awards. Winners were revealed at a recent ceremony in the college’s Dye House Gallery.

Three students were honoured for making outstanding contributions. Ume Habiba collected the outstanding contribution to others trophy for her work as a student ambassador and course representative.

David Winn’s volunteer work with organisations including the British Heart Foundation, Bradford Literature Festival and Bradford Festival was recognised in his award for outstanding contribution to Bradford.

Steven Clay took the outstanding contribution to Bradford College prize for championing the voice of students through his role as a representative, Students’ Union part-time officer and trustee.

The trio also all took home gold awards in the student participation awards section with fourth gold award for participation going to John Carolan for his volunteer work on student radio station, RamAir.

Four students, Mohamed Baaziz, Mphango Simwaka, Cammy Edmondson and Becki Ashworth, received gold awards for leadership.

Community organisation Bradford People First, a self-advocacy group run by people with learning disabilities, for people with learning disabilities, was presented with the community impact on students award.

Amadou Jallow collected the Football Society player of the year prize, and the big winner among the teaching staff was public services tutor Christopher Reid who walked away with both the inspiring teaching and the tutor of the year awards.

The innovative teaching award went to law tutor Thomas Knight.

Science and Maths tutor Jim Taylor collected the excellent teaching award. biology tutor Fran Hooley won the effective feedback and assessment award, and the further education department for art, science and humanities was recognised as the department which received the highest number of nominations from all teaching awards.

The support staff of year trophy went to progress coach, Umar Rafique.

Student advisor Kath Denison was named Students’ Union staff member of the year while Darren Wright from the estates department was given a special commendation for contribution to college.

Robson Brown, Student Representation Coordinator, said: “The awards are totally student led. This year, our members got more say on why staff deserved awards, making it our best ever in terms of people who took part.

“It’s not just a celebration – what students say about what makes great teaching and support at College goes right back into improving quality across the College.”
