A PHOTOGRAPH of two Bradford children playing together has helped a local primary school win a national contest.

A group of students from Feversham Primary Academy had submitted the photo, titled Feversham Friends, for the primary school category of The National School Photography Awards.

Out of the hundreds of entries in the competition, a judging panel of top photographers created a shortlist of 35 a category, and Feversham was judged the winner of its category earlier this month. Yesterday the students that make up the Feversham Digital Leaders group that took the photo were presented with their awards at a special school assembly.

The group of pupils took several pictures of their fellow pupils based around the theme of friendship, and then voted on what they thought was the best image.

The winning photo is a spontaneous picture of two reception pupils, Maria Biletskq and Sara Iman, laughing and playing, and was captured on an iPad. The image was then touched up, and the background re-coloured in black and white.

Judges were impressed by the natural scene, and said of their decision: “This photo captures friendship perfectly. It’s a really lovely moment, caught superbly on camera.”

The competition is organised by FSE Design in partnership with camera retailer Jessops and accessory company Manfrotto. Yesterday the pupils were presented with their prize of a camera, tripod and accessories , and a framed version of the winning photo will be hung in the school’s reception.

Judges included Ian Savage, Jessops Head of Training and Development, Tony Hardacre - photographer for The Times Education Supplement, and Guardian photographer John Robertson.

Mohammad Umar, a Year 4 pupil in the group, said: “We voted on each picture to decide which one were were going to use.”

Uzma Ali, also in Year 4, said: “We took lots of pictures and then we chose a few that were the best. This was the one that got the most votes.”

The group said they were very excited when they found out they had won.

Asif Iqbal, senior leader at the school, said: “The theme was school values, and the value our pupils chose to represent was friendship.”

The group has also decorated a wall with hashtags that best represented these values, including #Fevershamfriendship
