COMMUNITY-spirited residents clubbed together to repair a “hazardous” pothole-ridden road in Low Moor, Bradford.

Thirteen households across three streets gave their own money so work could be carried out on the unadopted Main Street. The road runs along the bottom of Second Street and up to Fifth Street.

The initiative was led by Angela Stanworth and her partner Mick McMahon - and boosted when they found out another resident, Chris Hall, had already been asking questions about getting the road repaired.

“It’s an unadopted road,” said Angela. “It was full of potholes and hazardous to both pedestrians and drivers. Last year, I decided I wanted to do something about this problem and together with my partner, Michael, we started some research.”

They delivered letters to local residents and contacted businesses. Thirteen households donated between £50 and £400 each and some companies gave the rest.

“Community spirit has achieved a lot and we are all very happy with the result,” said Angela. “And it comes down to the generosity of people.

“They have put their trust in us, who some did not know from Adam, and they have put money in. They have been fabulous.

“It really is a community effort. The people that have paid in have given their money and their time.”

She added: “I just want to say thank you - we really appreciate it. It was such a big ask of everyone - and the companies didn’t have to put in.

“There was myself, my partner Mick McMahon, Chris Hall, Trudi and Ian Cannar, Josh Cannar, Russ and Kir Simmonds, Chris Simmonds and Jackie, Craig Deacon, Nicola Bowles, Elaine Drake, Paul and Christine Hutchinson, Lee Innes MBE, Heather Broadbent, Margaret Hindle, Chris and Sue Hare, Norland Interiors, BASF and Rhenus Logistics.

“Special thanks must go to Dave Mazurke, at Bradford Council highways, who has supported us from the beginning and visited the site several times in his own time.

“He has shown real community spirit, as have each of the contributors, and without the generous donations from Norland Interiors, Rhenus Logistics and BASF we just would not have been able to see this project through.”

On the repaired street, Angela said: “It was shocking before. Now it is lovely driving out of the street in the morning. It has made such a big difference.”
