WEST Yorkshire Police has seized 450 banned dogs in the last three years, the force has revealed.

In the year to March 2016, 176 banned breed dogs were seized by West Yorkshire officers, under the Dangerous Dogs Act. The previous year the figure was 179, and in 2013-14 there were 95 dogs seized.

The force disclosed the figures in answer to a Freedom of Information request by the BBC, which established that West Yorkshire had the second highest percentage of dangerous dogs seized by UK police forces.

It found that 20 dogs were seized per 100,000 people. Only West Midlands had a higher figure.

The national figures showed that more than 4,750 dangerous dogs were seized by police in the last three years. There are four breeds banned in the UK, including the pitbull terrier.
