SOME tenants have reacted angrily to bombshell news that more than 120 homes in Bradford are to be demolished by a social housing landlord.

Incommunities is to pull down Ashton House, Osmond House and Taunton House in Croscombe Walk, Little Horton, which it says are difficult to let.

The three, eight-storey block of flats contain a total of 123 one or two bedroom flats.

Incommunities says at least one-fifth of the flats are empty and each block has a high turnover of tenancies.

It wants to redevelop the site for higher demand family-sized houses, saying it is now "unviable" to maintain the three blocks of flats.

Letters sent to residents informing them that they will have to move have provoked anger among some.

Philip Dean, 56, who has lived in a one-bedroom flat in Taunton House for the last four years, said: "I'm absolutely devastated.

"They are breaking up a good community.

"I love this place and I love the people. There has been no consultation with the tenants. It's not right.

"It looks like a done deal and the decision has already been made.

"They have totally dismembered people's lives."

Maria Holt, 31, who has lived in a one-bedroom flat in Osmond House for the last two years, said: "It stinks.

"I'm annoyed. I just blew up when I found out the news.

"It's a decent block of flats. Why are they doing it? I really like it here."

Michael Hudson, 52, who has lived in his seventh floor, one-bedroom flat in Ashton House since 1994, said he was confused by the decision to knock down the three blocks of flats.

"Not too long ago they spent a lot of money putting new windows and doors and and fixed the roof. Now suddenly they want to knock it all down. It does not make a bit of sense.

"I'm not fussed about moving, as long as it isn't too far away."

According to a demolition notice, Incommunities has until March 18, 2020, to take down the flats.

It said from Monday, April 11, its staff will contact every household in the three affected blocks of flats to discuss their specific housing needs and assistance with individual moves.

There will also be a drop-in session held in the reception area of Buchan Towers on Wednesday, April 13, between 3pm to 7pm.

Jez Lester, Incommunities' assistant chief executive, asset management, said: "We have explored all the options but it is simply unviable to maintain these blocks.

"There have been long-standing demand issues and this has been compounded by the welfare reform changes affecting the popularity of this type of accommodation.

"We fully appreciate this is a distressing time for many of the residents and everyone can be assured we will strive to meet their individual housing needs.

"We will also keep residents fully informed of our plans as these are progressed."
