A TEENAGER lost control of a car while driving at excessive speed on a residential Bradford street, crashing into a church wall and killing his 15-year-old passenger, a court heard.

Alleged driver Syam Khan, 19, then left the scene of the crash and claimed someone else had been driving, the court was told.

Khan and four other defendants are alleged to have conspired together to cover up his identity.

A jury at Bradford Crown Court was today shown CCTV footage of the red Volkswagen Golf sliding sideways and propelling a wheelie bin across a garden, moments before it struck the wall and railings of the church, in Gilpin Street, Barkerend, near to the junction with Barkerend Road.

Schoolboy Saliq Malik, the front seat passenger, suffered severe head and neck injuries and died in hospital more than five hours after the crash.

Prosecutor David Dixon told the jury that an accident investigator had concluded that: "The driver of the car simply lost control because he was going too fast. That led to the car rotating, sliding, and hitting the wall with force."

Mr Dixon said that, at about 11am on September 12, 2014, residents in Gilpin Street noticed a car driving at excessive speed. One, who saw it go past, estimated it was travelling at 60mph in a 30mph limit.

Witness Patricia Storr saw the Volkswagen had crashed into a parked car and the church wall and the front of the VW was "caved in."

She saw someone get out of the driver's seat. "The Crown say that was Syam Khan," said Mr Dixon.

A second male, 15-year-old Haris Khan, got out from the back of the car and was taken to hospital with a fractured pelvis and elbow.

Saliq was in the front passenger seat and was not responsive.

Mr Dixon said that within a minute or two of the accident, another car arrived, Khan got in and it was driven away. He said: "That car had been summonsed in some way to remove Syam Khan from the scene ... so his identity was hidden and he was not arrested."

He said Nadeem Hussain, 29, and Yasser Hussain, 28, were involved in that.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and officers went to the hospital. Syam Khan was in the waiting area and was joined by another man, Waqas Iqbal. Both men went to the toilets and Khan emerged wearing Iqbal's tracksuit top.

"That change of clothing was deliberate to try and hide who he was," Mr Dixon alleged.

He claimed that another man, Haji Rehman, who was related to Khan, tried to protect him and attempted to prevent his arrest by lying about his whereabouts.

Khan, of Kimberley Street, Laisterdyke, Bradford, has pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Nadeem and Yasser Hussain, both of Gladstone Street, Bradford Moor; Iqbal, 21, of Florence Street, Laisterdyke; and Rehman, 35, of Kimberley Street, all deny conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Patricia Storr told the jury she saw a young man, wearing jogging bottoms and a white T-shirt, get out of the driver's seat and walk towards her.

She said: "I asked the young man 'was he all right?' He didn't answer. He was on his mobile phone and he was swearing and telling somebody to come and pick him up, he had been in an accident."

The trial continues.
