A TWO-year-old girl has been left orphaned after her parents were found dead from knife wounds in what police are treating as a murder-suicide at their home in Bradford.

Police found the bodies of Anthony Roberts, 37, and Margaride, known as Guida, Rufino, 38, at their detached house in Cross Road, Idle.

The couple's tot was not present at the address and is now being cared for by family members.

Detectives are treating the matter as a murder investigation, and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Scott of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team last night said: "The police investigation is still at an early stage, however we are treating this as a murder enquiry.

"A full post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death for both Ms Rufino and Mr Roberts.

"At this stage we are satisfied that no other parties were involved in the incident."

Last night it was not yet clear who had killed who.

The couple were both pronounced dead at the scene and two knives were recovered from the property by officers.

Post-mortem examinations were due to take place today.

Flowers have been left outside the house, with one message saying: "RIP. Such a tragedy and a loss."

A police spokesman said Mr Roberts had serious leg injuries, while Ms Rufino had suffered serious neck injuries. Their daughter was not in the property at the time of the incident, said police.

She attends Wesley House Nursery, which is about a two-minute walk from her home, on the other side of Idle Recreation Ground to the house. Staff at the nursery were visibly upset yesterday.

Nursery manager Hayley Wright said that Guida had told her last Thursday that she could not wait for her daughter to start talking and say things like 'I love you, mummy'.

She had rung the parents' mobile phones yesterday morning after news of the incident broke.

"There was no answer," she said. "I cried and was in shock. I still do not believe it."

On the couple, she said Ms Rufino, who was believed to be of Portuguese descent, was "lovely" and "really chatty".

She said Mr Roberts also really chatty and used to stay at the nursery talking to staff when he picked his daughter up.

Miss Wright added that he was "really good" with his daughter.

She also said that there was never an inkling that anything was wrong in the couple's relationship, adding that Mr Roberts was a teacher and Ms Rufino worked in occupational health.

"I offered to babysit for them if they ever wanted a date night," said Miss Wright, who added about nursery staff: "We feel shocked and devastated and in disbelief. Everyone burst out crying."

Dr Jacqueline Senior, business partner of Ms Rufino at Leeds Occupational Health Ltd, paid tribute to her colleague, and said: "Guida and I had worked together for many years. We first met when we worked at Interact Health here in Leeds in 2002.

"That company went into administration in January 2005, we saw the opportunity to start our own company, and Leeds Occupational Health Limited started trading on April 1, 2005.

"She always wanted a child and gave birth to a beautiful daughter in 2013, to whom she was devoted.

"She returned from maternity leave invigorated and inspired to grow our business and we both looked forward to an exciting 2016.

"We are all devastated. Dr Paul Davies, my other business partner, and all our employees send sincere condolences to her family."

Andrew Clifford, director of First Class Childcare, which owns Wesley House nursery, said: "It's pretty devastating for the staff as they have worked with that family very closely. They're very shocked. It's very sad news."

On the young girl, he added: "I'm glad to hear that she wasn't caught up in anything, as much as she's going to have some very sad news to deal with.

"Our sympathies lie with the family at this time."

Mr Roberts is the cousin of Leeds snooker player Paul Hunter, who died of cancer in 2006. He is said to have spoken at the star's funeral and also had a tattoo of the player.

In the months before Mr Hunter’s death, Mr Roberts - who was also known as Tony - ran the Leeds Half Marathon for a cancer charity. It is believed Mr Roberts went primary and secondary schools in Leeds.

A friend of the couple, who met Ms Rufino about four years ago, said: "She was such a nice woman and such a laugh. Anthony was lovely, really talkative and they were really loved up - the kind of relationship you want for yourself one day."

Councillor Jeanette Sunderland (Lib Dem, Idle and Thackley) said: "I am just devastated by it.

"She was just a beautiful, charming young woman with a great future."

Councillor Dominic Fear (Lib Dem, Idle and Thackley) said: "It's a quiet and peaceful area with lots of families living there. A violent incident like this will have a profound impact on the community.

"It’s not an every day occurrence and it’s a real big shock to the area and the people that knew them.

"The most important thing is to establish the facts. We need to let the police do their job. If people have any information at all, they need to contact the police, even if it seems something small. It may fit a bigger picture.

"If there are issues that the Council needs to be involved with, or the community needs to be supported, that will be my role."

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said they believed the man doted on the young girl as they could be heard playing in the garden in nice weather.

Another neighbour, Karen Gloster, 55, said she heard "some bangs" but did not know what they were.

She added: "It is a very quiet street. I did not know them."

Alison Kelly, 41, said: "It is a quiet house. I used to see them cutting the hedges, but that's it."

She added: "It is shocking. It is a nice street and a nice area. I just cannot believe it."

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "I met the man when I took a present round for the baby and he seemed very pleasant.

"It is heartbreaking. My parents would roll over in their graves. They would never believe something like this could happen."

One man said: "It is terrible. You would have to be in some despair to do that."

Another neighbour said: "I knew it was something serious. I saw guys in white suits.

"It was cordoned off most of the evening and it was only in the morning it was cleared."

He added: "I feel pretty devastated. It is one of those 'not in my back yard' things. I cannot believe it."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police were called to an address in Cross Road in Idle at 6.23pm on Sunday, after receiving a report of a domestic incident.

"Officers attended and found the body of a 38-year-old woman inside the property.

"She had suffered serious injuries to her neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A 37-year-old man was also found inside the house with serious injuries to his leg.

"He was also pronounced dead at the scene.

"Two knives were recovered from the property.

"Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident, but are appealing for anyone who heard or saw any suspicious activity in the area at about 6pm yesterday to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiries Team on 101, or report anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
