LOVE them or loathe them, monster sprouts will be hitting Morrisons stores in Bradford this week.

According to the Bradford-based supermarket giant, the super-size sprouts are the biggest for a decade and have grown 20 per cent larger this year.

This is due to the milder weather and good growing conditions throughout the summer and autumn in Britain, leaving the staple of the Christmas dinner bigger than the size of golf balls.

Measuring approximately 40mm wide and 45mm long, each monster sprout is expected to weigh about 35g, more than double the normal amount.

Good news for sprout lovers, but for sprout haters the super-vegetable could be one mouthful too far.

Scott Gilbert, store general manager at Morrisons in Thornbury said: “Normally, the sprouts we sell are only 30mm in diameter and weigh 15g. We expect these bigger sprouts will be highly sought after by some sprout lovers!”

John Clappison, one of Morrisons sprout growers, said: “Our sprout plants have loved the warmer weather. The higher temperatures have made them shoot up and produce the biggest most succulent sprouts that we’ve seen in ten years!”

More than 1,000 tonnes of the gigantic sprouts are expected to be supplied to Morrisons over the winter.
