A 92-YEAR-old woman was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after being involved in a collision with a car in Bradford city centre this afternoon.

The pensioner was crossing Godwin Street, near to its junctions with Sunbridge Road and Kirkgate, when the incident happened at about 2.25pm today.

Godwin Street inbound was reported to be re-opened with traffic easing at around 7pm.

She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) by ambulance for treatment to head, pelvic and leg injuries. A police spokesman at the scene of the collision said the elderly pedestrian being taken to LGI, rather than Bradford Royal Infirmary, was more as a precautionary measure because of her age.

The car involved was a red Rover 216. The elderly male driver of the car remained at the scene following the collision to speak to police.

One woman at the scene, who did not want to be named, said: "I am not surprised this has happened here. It is so dangerous, this crossing. You don't know where cars are coming from.

"Something needs to be done to make it safer.

"I hope the woman is all right."

UPDATE: Woman, 92, hit by car is 'serious but stable' in hospital

A business owner said the pensioner was laying in the road for about an hour between the collision happening and her being placed into the ambulance.

The man did not want to be named, but said: "I didn't see the collision, but I saw the woman on the floor and people coming out to her. It seemed like someone was trying to resuscitate her.

"She was there for a while. The paramedics and ambulance turned up and were treating her - but the overall process seemed to take forever. She was lying there for about an hour, from being hit to being taken away in the ambulance.

"There was also a lot of commotion, with people gathering round to see what had happened."

One man was threatened with arrest by a police officer after arguing that he wanted to cross the road while the police cordon was still in place. A cab driver was also given a telling off by a PCSO after appearing to try and use the pavement to get down Sunbridge Road.

Police closed Godwin Street at its junctions with Sunbridge Road and James Street, with traffic heading from Westgate direction diverted down Sackville Street.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they sent two rapid response vehicles and an ambulance to the scene.
