The M62 near Chain Bar has partially re-opened following the death of a man who fell from a bridge.

The westbound carriageway was closed between Junction 26 (Chain Bar) and Junction 25 (Brighouse) after the incident near Hartshead Moor services at 3.30pm.

At 6.30pm two lanes, of four, reopened but there was still congestion reported on the M62 back to to Junction 29 (Lofthouse), on the M606 to Junction 3 (Staygate Roundabout) and on M621 to Junction 3 (Leeds City Centre).

The westbound carriageway was fully reopened at 8pm.

The A649 which runs above the motorway has also been re-opened.

Drivers are being advised to follow the 'hollow diamond' symbol diversion signs via the A58 towards Halifax, the A641 to Brighouse and the A643, before using the A644 towards Dewsbury to rejoin the M62 at Junction 25.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended the incident and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

One lane was reopened shortly before 6pm, and a second is due to reopen at around 6.15pm. The remaining two lanes are expected to reopen around 7pm.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area and find an alternative route.

The closure has caused severe traffic congestion, at its worst stretching past Junction 28 (Tingley) towards Junction 29 (Lofthouse) and along the M606 to Staygate Roundabout.
