PROTESTERS angry at the introduction of evening peak fares on many Northern Rail routes have given a 4,000-name petition to the Department of Transport.

It calls on the government to reverse the decision, meaning many rail users either having to pay more or change their travel times.

Public transport campaigner Martin Abrams said: “After train fares on many routes in the north of England more than doubled overnight, today we have brought northern anger and frustration to the heart of Westminster.

“At a time when the government should be supporting this growing workforce they are instead hiking fares to unaffordable levels.

“More than 4,000 people have supported our calls for these fares to be scrapped and we now call on rail minister Claire Perry and transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin to think again about these unfair fares, do the right thing and scrap them.”
