STUDENTS at a Bradford school have been looking for Solutions for the Planet as part of a special project.

Year 8 pupils at Grange Technology College worked in teams to explore ideas which can improve society, the economy and the environment.

The activities were designed so the students could explore sustainability problems and then design an innovative Big Idea to address the problem through social change and enterprise. Examples of the types of problems looked at include plastic litter, deforestation or pollution.

The day also included researching and creating displays about the causes and consequences of sustainability problems. Teams finished by presenting their ideas to the rest of the group.

Project organiser and science teacher, Kristina Fielding said: “This is an exciting opportunity for our students to look at actual global issues and consider their role in society as future leaders and ambassadors of change."

Pupil Creddy Taylor said: “The best thing about the day was working with my team, developing the design ideas and presenting at the end of the day. I felt calm and confident standing up and explaining our idea to the rest of the group.”

Balfour Beatty is one of the companies working with Solutions for the Planet on their Big Ideas project and has supported the project at Grange. Teams will then be able to submit their projects to the regional round of the competition, and the national final is due to take place at the Houses of Parliament.
