BOLLARDS are being installed to stop quad bikes and cars taking a short cut over a field, thanks to people power.

Residents of Wenborough Lane in Holme Wood, Bradford, clubbed together to send a petition to Bradford Council about nuisance drivers making their lives a misery.

The 53-signature petition was calling for something to be done about the number of 4x4 vehicles and quad bikes cutting through a field between their street and Kesteven Road.

Now large stone boulders have been put down temporarily, and permanent posts are expected to be fitted by the end of the month.

But it is only a partial victory for the residents, as their other request - to get the street blocked off to stop cars and vans racing up and down - could be refused at a meeting next week.

The idea of blocking off the road will be discussed by Bradford South area committee on Thursday, but Council officers have recommended refusal.

Ray Palmer, of Wenborough Lane, who started the petition, said: "I did it so kids can play out in safety. Cars do come speeding down here."

He said while he will not be able to get to the meeting for health reasons, he was hoping the committee will agree to close one end of the road.

Mr Palmer knows only too well about the dangerous driving along his street, as he said a couple of years ago a car had lost control and crashed into his house.

He said: "A drunk driver came straight through my porch and bent a steel door in two.

"We came back and thought, 'What are all the police doing here?' It took them two hours to get it out."

A report going before the area committee says closing off the road would cost £10,000 to £15,000.

It says: "There have been no recorded traffic collisions resulting in injury the last five years at this location."

It adds that closing the road could cause problems in winter, especially given that it is on a hill.

But ward councillor Alan Wainwright (Lab, Tong), who sits on the committee, said councillors would fully consider what the petitioners were calling for.

He said: "I will take the report on its merits, as I'm sure other councillors on Bradford South will do on Thursday.

"It will get a fair hearing, like everybody does when they come with a petition."
