One of the best-known figures in the history of Skipton’s Ermysted’s Grammar School has died at the age of 90.

Wally Evans (pictured) worked at the school for 39 years, becoming head of the physics department and then deputy headmaster for many years.

Mr Evans, whose first name was Walford, was born in the village of Cymau in North Wales.

In 1950 he moved to Ermysted’s and he played for Skipton Rugby Club, captaining the side in the early 1950s. On retirement he and his wife moved to Linton, where Mr Evans started a new career helping on the farm run by his daughter and her husband.

Mr Evans leaves his widow, Mary, his daughters Christine and Gillian, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
