The reading skills of pupils at Delius Special School in Bradford are outstanding, according to Ofsted inspectors.

A report also praised the “impeccable” behaviour of children at the Barkerend Road school and said that relationships between adults and students are “excellent”.

Head teacher Sally Joy said: “We are very pleased to receive this glowing report as it reflects the achievement of our fantastic pupils, the support of their families and carers, and the hard work of our committed staff and governors.

“We have all worked together as a team to bring about the improvements which have led to Delius Special School being judged good.”

The report stated: “Pupils relish imaginative lessons. Teachers use their knowledge of individual pupils well to provide imaginative activities that are enjoyable and which allows pupils to make good progress.

“Adults are very imaginative in the way they teach basic reading skills. The daily sessions are a strength of the school and enable pupils to make outstanding progress in this area.

"The enthusiasm, knowledge and forward thinking of the headteacher, senior leaders and of the governing body, have seen the school go from strength to strength since the last inspection.”

The school’s chairman of governors, Sally Birkbeck, said: "This is an achievement of which we are all very proud.

"Thank you to everyone – pupils and their families, staff and governors, who have helped make Delius a good school. We are ambitious for the future and know that we can count on their continued hard work and support.”

Councillor Ralph Berry, executive member for children’s services, said: "This is a great achievement for Delius Special School. Congratulations go to all involved in bringing about this very positive outcome.”
