A couple from Bradford have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after their two-year-old son died from suspected drowning, an inquest heard.

Bradford Coroner’s Court was told yesterday that Mohammed Hayam Khurram died at Bradford Royal Infirmary on November 24 last year.

In a statement read out in court, coroner’s officer Malcolm Dyson said the youngster’s death was “in such circumstances that it was believed it was due to drowning”.

Mohammed lived on Crawford Street, East Bowling, in Bradford, the court was told.

Police were called on to investigate Mohammed’s death in the aftermath of the concerns raised by BRI about the nature of the child’s death.

His mum and dad were arrested just days later in connection with the incident and prosecutors are now considering the case before deciding whether or not to bring charges.

Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Morgan, a police investigator who was present in court, said: “We were contacted on November 24 to say a child had been brought into Bradford Royal Infirmary following a suspected drowning.”

Detective Chief Inspector Morgan, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said officers were sent to examine the scene of the alleged incident, and said: “We asked for a forensic post-mortem. The cause of death was unascertained at the time.

“On November 27 and 28 respectively, Mohammed’s mum and dad were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. They remain on bail. The Crown Prosecution Service is considering possible charges.

“We are waiting for the Crown Prosecution Service to make a decision.”

Bradford’s Assistant Deputy Coroner Caroline Sumeray opened the inquest into Mohammed’s death during a five-minute hearing yesterday. She then adjourned the inquest, which will now be heard at a date to be fixed.
