Offenders on Community Payback Orders are on stand-by to clear footpaths and public areas as severe winter weather conditions hit Bradford, say West Yorkshire Probation Service.

As part of their court orders, offenders taking part in the trust’s Community Payback teams will clear snow and ice as the region braces itself for plummeting temperatures and hazardous conditions.

The Highways Agency has issued an ‘amber alert’ advising motorists to take extra care while travelling due to the increased risk of adverse driving conditions.

They are advising commuters to plan their journeys before they set out, checking forecasts and road conditions, and to leave extra time or delay their journeys if the weather becomes severe.

The snow is certainly sticking in BD6, Halifax Road is clear thanks to the gritters. It is snowing heavily at the moment and looks like it is going to stay that way. If it stays this way it could disruption to traffic at the tea-time rush hour. Please drive with care bearing in mind the wintry weather.

The Met Office has upgraded its “cold weather action” warning to level three - one underneath a national emergency - for all of England, warning winter weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.

Andy Page, Met Office chief forecaster, said: “We expect rain, sleet and snow to affect many parts of the UK over the next day or so, with eastern areas of Britain seeing the most snowfall. With some very low temperatures overnight we expect ice to cause some impacts too and people should be aware that there is likely to be some travel disruption.”

10:33am

Overnight snowfall is causing minor traffic disruption in Bradford today.
Bradford Council said its gritters had been out on primary routes in the city from around 3.30am this morning as rain and sleet turned to snow.
So far, no major incidents have been reported, but visability is reduced on the M62 due to fog.
Passengers at Leeds Bradford Airport are being warned to allow extra time for their journeys and to check the status of their flight with their airline or tour operator before travelling to the airport.
No school closures have been reported in the Bradford area.

Ooo it's snowing. Wtf?
Scandinavian countries have tons more snowfall then the few drops of the white stuff we have here.

The Russians have tons more snow then all of the UK combined.

The temperatures in those countries can plunge below minus 30!
None of these countries close schools, no trains are cancelled. No roads are shut. People there do not moan and groan, they just get on with it and do not start pointing fingers at the sky and saying oooo it's snowing and we are doomed.

Grow up you bunch of softies. It's only snow and not the end of the world.

This is pathetic and embarassing. I have more snow in my fridge than there is out there. And schools are closing? That is a disgrace. It is January for chuff sake - winter. And we have a huge 2mm of snow. Woopy do.

Yes, all of that is true but as it is a 'known' situation for approx 6-8 months of the year they have the infrastructure to deal with it, as ours is a variable we just don't have the same sort of set up.

I do agree though, the country has gone soft, people have been leaving my place of work in Bradford centre since 10AM this morning, myself and a colleague, who has to drive to Bury daily, are still sat working happily with no concerns about what was a small amount of snow.
