Contracts with government organisations always contain penalty clauses- it's only our Council that don't seem to be bothered with them!

Everybody seems to have forgotten that this sort of chaos already happened before the roadworks started. That's why the road's being improved.

It's an easy soundbite for Galloway to suggest 'speeding up' the works, but would he want to work weekends and through the night? He can't even be bothered doing his day time job and attend Parliament.

First of all, any broken down vehicles should be taken to an MOT bay and any found to be defective should make the owner liable to £££ fines. There's no reason why so many cars should be breaking down on the motorway.

Secondly - the lanes are too narrow for too long. You can see lorries slowly moving across lanes then correcting, inches from others in the next lane.

Thirdly..any accidents...priority should be to get the injured out then clear the motorway - none of this fancy accident investigation for hours and hours with the road closed. Just drag everything over to the hard shoulder - oh, wait, there isn't one - scrap that idea...but get the motorway cleared and moving as priority after the injured.

Don't worry, Bradford MP Gorgeous George has got involved, saying that the roadworks should be speeded up ; great input George, how long did it take you to come up with that oracle.

Yes, it seems that the hours of delays were caused by the investigation work going on for hours and not the fact there were roadworks ongoing.

This increase in investigation work is another effect of the 'no-win, no-fee' climate- even the emergency services are now claiming on people's car insurance for their time spent on accidents.
Perhaps this is what the MPs should be concentrating on, rather than just making statements that sound good.

IMO : A guy fell from his motorbike suffering minor injuries consistent with falling off your motorbike whilst half asleep and a van driver who was not paying attention ran in to the back of another van causing minor damage in the panic caused.
Now what is to investigate.
It's about police establishing Blame and charging it all to the guilty parties insurance company.
A right earner.
The cost, thousands can not get to work, loose wages, get sacked, have to give up a days holiday whilst the pandemonium takes place.
Then they try to say it's disrespectful, for moaning ? No it is disrespectful for making such a song and dance to the expense of everyone else out of such a minor trivial event.
Get the road clear and open as quick as possible, let insurance companies argue over liability.

I assume that someone from the T&A must have got stuck in the jam. Is a traffic jam really worth 2 articles and a poll on whether the works should be 'speeded up'

The last Iheard on any accident where a vehicle ran into the back of another it was the one running into the other that was to blame,(other than these criminals who deliberately cause them to claim ficticious injury payments) therefore I would think apportioning blame would simple in minor bumps and getting the road cleared of debris to allow traffic to flow again easy enough.If those firms claiming lost income were to claim against the highways division for unecessary delays in getting the traffic moving maybe just maybe we would see a bit more urgency.

The accident and breakdown stats are staggering!

Having said that, the motorway has not been fit for purpose for 10-15 years now and it was always going to get worse before it got better.

But suggesting anyone be paid damages for loss of income is ridiculous in my view. The Department of Transport can't be held responsible for human error.

I would like a simple answer to a simple question.
Why was it closed for so long for what was really not a serious collision. Why did it take so long to deal with?
That is a question for the Police to answer.
Will we get one?

Life I'm afraid is just full of futility. What's the point getting worked up about one's fellow man (and woman). In my expectations, which aren't great, I find a goodly 80 percent of folk are utterly useless, they can't help it and they'll never be brain surgeons. They often become councillors, politicians, road builders ...etc.... Which is why we're in this mess. The politicians procrastinate & say there's "Nay Money" and now with super-enhanced Health & Safety the contractors say "Nay Hurry".

M'way accidents are generally very serious and require a proper investigation. Damage to the road structure and barriers also needs to be repaired before traffic is allowed to use the road. This cannot be achieved with traffic passing. Having said that some commonsense should prevail and every effort made to deal with the problem as swiftly as possible.

I remember watching look north last year and they were talking about how many people were being caught out by the average speed limits on m62 with the road works.

1200 people a day, times that by £60 a go.

Why would the government hurry up the contractors. A nice little earner for them and the insurance companies.

How have you got it down to only 80%?

Its was caos on the Dudley Hill roundabout at 8:00 am, 3 hours after the accident a lot of people on buses were late for work and Kids late for school, so it wasnt just businesses that were affected!
