A 66-year-old man from Shipley has been arrested following a fatal road collision.

He is being questioned by police in connection with an incident which lead to the death of 80-year-old Alan Naylor, from Gomersal.

The arrest follows an appeal by police and Mr Naylor's brother for information about the incident on New North Road, Heckmondwike.

David Naylor, the brother of Alan, who was knocked over when crossing the road had the public to contact the police with any information they had no matter how small.

David Naylor, who travelled to West Yorkshire from his home in Ireland said his brother a schoolteacher for all his life was a quiet, private but friendly person.

"He was involved in the community and contributed a great deal. He was very interested in local history and had a number of articles published in various magazines, as well as a book of historical photographs of Birstall."

Alan Naylor, of Gomersal, was crossing New North Road at Six Lane Ends, Heckmondwike, at around 9.45pm last Wednesday after visiting the Old Hall pub further down the road.

Before retiring Alan Naylor was a teacher at Birstall Church of England School, and Norristhorpe Primary. Recently he had been studying for a Masters degree at Bradford University.

  • A 22-year-old man has also been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
