Drugs dogs were deployed at Keighley rail station today as part of a new drive to sniff out crime in the town.
The Keighley neighbourhood policing team and partners from the Operations Support Unit have now begun regular patrols with drugs dogs in Keighley town centre, rail and bus stations, as part of efforts to combat the supply of drugs.
The patrols are taking place throughout this month and will see police take the Force's 'canine detectives' on patrols of Keighley railway station and the area outside the college on North Street.
Passive drugs dogs are trained to sniff out any trace of controlled substances on a person and are sensitive enough to even detect traces of drugs on a person who, while not carrying any, may have recently been using them recently.
Inspector Wayne Horner, of the Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Drugs dogs are an incredibly effective weapon for us to deploy to combat drugs in Keighley and I want to thank colleagues from operations support and BTP for helping us start these patrols.
"Our specialist dogs are highly trained and sensitive to even detect those who, while not carrying drugs, may have been using them previously so those who do use or carry narcotics should be aware that there will be no place to hide if they come across a patrol."
