A RIDDLESDEN woman is tackling the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks – three-legged!

Bethan May is taking on the challenge to raise money for a placement in Nepal.

The 23-year-old will spend 10 weeks in the country this spring with a team of volunteers, working on a project to help the community.

She is being joined on her Three Peaks trek by friend Ciara Hanstock, 24, who now lives in Manchester but is originally from Otley.

“I wanted to do something a little different to raise funds,” said Bethan, who works in the bakery at Asda’s Keighley store.

“My sister Anna did the Three Peaks barefoot in 2015, so I’ll be following in family footsteps – but wearing boots!

“With Ciara living in Manchester it’s been quite difficult to train together, but we’re both active hikers and reasonably fit so hopefully that will help us through it.

“I’ve done different combinations of the Three Peaks before, but never all of them together.

“I like to push myself and I’m really excited about the challenge.”

The duo have a provisional date of March 17 for the effort, which will take in Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

The pair plan to set off at 4am, in a bid to finish in daylight.

Bethan has an overall fundraising target of £800 for the Nepal trip, and is currently about half way towards the total.

While in the country, on an International Citizen Service placement with Raleigh International, she could be working on one of two schemes.

One involves improving water sanitation and hygiene awareness, and the other is aimed at encouraging young people and women to start their own businesses.

Ciara is taking part in the same initiative, but they could be in different groups.

“We set off in April but you don’t know until you get out there precisely where you’ll be or what you will be doing – it depends where the need is greatest,” said Bethan.

“I applied last September to take part and got accepted late last year.

“I was delighted.

“It is a great chance to make a real difference.

“I’m hoping to get into international relief work, so this will provide invaluable experience.”

Bethan already volunteers with projects on home soil, including the InTouch Foundation’s Keighley soup kitchen and the Young Person’s Prevention and Support Service in Halifax. An online fundraising page has been set up for her Nepal trip.
