THE owner of a roofing company came to the rescue of a cat in Keighley after it climbed a bit higher than it could cope with.

Paddy, a six-month-old cat being looked after by Keighley Cat Care fosterer Angela Gray in Riddlesden, had climbed a tree in her garden one morning earlier this month, and was still up it at 10pm that night.

Miss Gray, who has been looking after cats for Keighley Cat Care for eight years, said Paddy had been let out into her garden during the morning but when she returned home at lunchtime he was 30 feet up in the tree and showing no sign of being able to come down.

Despite a length of spare guttering being positioned to give him access to the ground he remained in the tree all afternoon and into the late evening, only shifting to climb even higher.

Miss Gray said: "I tried the RSPCA and different tree surgeons but no one was able to come out. It was dark, cold and getting late and I was resigned to him being stuck up the tree all night.

"I was getting desperate and asked on social media if anyone could help."

At 9.45pm she was called by Dale Barlow, owner of CD Roofing Contractors.

Mr Barlow, of Glusburn, came to Riddlesden at 10.15pm and used his cherry picker to pluck Paddy from the branches and bring him down to earth.

Miss Gray said: "Dale was a star, and I'm so grateful to him. He wouldn't accept any payment. Paddy is now absolutely fine."

Mr Barlow said he had seen Keighley Cat Care's appeal for assistance on Facebook, adding that he had been happy to help.
