A CARE home has been put in special measures after being branded inadequate by the Care Quality Commission.

Bosses at the Bronte Park Residential Home in Haworth have been given six months to make significant improvements.

The home in Bridgehouse Lane received an inadequate rating for leadership, and the safety, effectiveness and responsiveness of its service.

Inspectors, who visited the home on April 27 and May 8, also said the quality of the home’s care for its 24 residents required improvement.

They identified eight breaches in regulations regarding issues such as staffing, fit and proper persons employed, safe care and treatment, safeguarding, person-centred care, dignity and respect, and good governance.

The inspectors said the overall quality had declined significantly since the previous inspection in February 2016, when the home was classed as requiring improvement.

Bronte Park is run by Bronte Regency Healthcare Ltd.

During the latest inspection inspectors discovered there were not enough care staff on duty to keep people safe or meet their needs in a timely way.

Inspectors questioned the quality of staff training after finding poor practices regarding moving, handling, privacy and dignity.

The report states: “In their direct dealings with people we saw staff were kind and caring. However, we found practices in the home which showed a lack of respect for the people who lived there.

“People were not receiving person-centred care which met their needs or preferences and there was a lack of visible activities to keep people occupied people's nutrition.

“People’s health care needs were mostly been met, however there were some concerns about the management of people’s nutrition and hydration needs. Medicines were being managed safely.

“People’s views about the meals were mixed and the meal time experience was very poor for some people.

“Risks associated with the building were poorly managed, leaving people at risk. Repairs were not being completed in a timely way.

“A complaints procedure was in place, however, concerns were not always investigated.

“We did not find an open and honest culture at the service. Staff found it difficult to answer direct questions or were not honest in their answers.”

Inspectors said there was a lack of effective management and leadership which, coupled with effective quality assurance systems, meant issues were not identified and resolved.

They added: “We found shortfalls in the care service provided to people.”
