A chippy has lodged an appeal after planners threw out an application for security shutters.

Mother Hubbard's had sought permission retrospectively for the external roller shutters – together with new entrance steps and an access ramp at the premises in Bradford Road, Stockbridge, Keighley.

But Bradford Council said the scheme would result in "significant visual harm" to both the building and the surrounding area.

"The use of solid or perforated/punched-hole-type shutters is specifically discouraged due to their hostile appearance when closed," added a council spokesman.

"The visual harm is further exacerbated by the scale of the shutters and the prominent location of the property, alongside a busy highway.

"Perforated external shutters create an unattractive 'dead frontage' and limit light spillage onto the footway.

"It is considered they cause the frontage of the site to be vulnerable to anti-social behaviour and crime and the surrounding area to potentially feel uninviting and unsafe."

Keighley Town Council had recommended the application be approved.

The appeal is being dealt with on the basis of written representations.
