SPEEDING motorists are endangering people's lives in two different parts of Keighley, according to a local councillor.

Keighley town councillor Fulzar Ahmed said people living in Redcliffe Street, Highfield and Mannville Road, Knowle Park, had warned him that someone would be killed or badly injured if action is not taken soon.

He said local people had appealed for traffic calming measures to be installed in both these streets to try and get selfish, irresponsible drivers to slow down.

Cllr Ahmed said the problem in Redcliffe Street was most acute at the upper end of this road, as it approaches the junction with Highfield Road.

"Some cars are going at ridiculous speeds there," he said.

"It's happening at both night and day time, with no regard whatsoever for children or elderly people who could be trying to get across.

"There are a couple of Incommunities [Housing Association] flats in this area, so there are a lot of older people living on this part of the road.

"Also, there are usually vehicles parked on one side of Redcliffe Street, so if a child comes out from between these cars to cross the road, at the same time as one of those speeding cars, then they'll have no chance.

"There have already been a number of near misses. Residents have told me they would like speed humps on the road."

Cllr Ahmed said this location would be a prime spot for additional police patrols and Speed Watch operations to catch some of the speeding motorists in the act.

He said the main culprits tended to be people showing off in expensive, high-performance cars.

Outlining the similar problem in Mannville Road he said the presence of speed humps in nearby Malsis Road and Victoria Road meant some drivers were exploiting the lack of such measures in Mannville Road to break the limit here instead.

"It is a narrow road, with cars parked along one side of it and the park on the other," he added.

"When children are crossing the road to go to Lund Park they won't be thinking of the danger, so again, if someone is speeding there at the same time these children will be at massive risk.

"Even residents' vehicles parked at the side of the road have been damaged by these cars hitting them while speeding past.

"Residents are fed up with it. I want to raise awareness of the problem, so if anyone else living in these areas can give me feedback on the issue I will raise it with Bradford Council."

A spokesman for Bradford Council responded: “If residents and town councillors have concerns about road safety in their area, the best way to address them is to work through their local area committee and ward members who would be happy to help as much as they can.

“Highway officers will also raise the concerns about Redcliffe Street and Mannville Road, with ward members to agree a way forward.”
