A KEIGHLEY councillor said he hoped senior police chiefs are now more receptive to the idea of a possible move back to the town's former police station.

Speaking during the latest meeting of Keighley Town Council, Cllr Anayat Mohammad, chairman of the Civic Centre Strategy Committee, said matters had moved on since an initial approach was made to West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Mark Burns-Williamson.

Amidst ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of the current Keighley Police Station in Royd Ings Avenue, Cllr Mohammad wrote to Mr Burns-Williamson suggesting the town council's Civic Centre – the old police station – could again be a police station if officers abandon Royd Ings.

Cllr Mohammad said: "The response we got at first was a 'straight bat' and they didn't seem interested in talking to us about the idea. We got a bit despondent.

"But the PCC has now come back and offered us a meeting, which we're quite hopeful about."

He added his committee was not yet ready to reveal its own recommendations on the Civic Centre's overall future, but still intends to bring these proposals to a full meeting of the town council as soon as they are finalised.
