KEIGHLEY's 42nd annual model railway show is being hailed as a record breaker.

About 2,000 visitors converged on University Academy Keighley (UAK) over the weekend, which included the Keighley town mayor, Councillor Shabir Ahmed.

It was the first time the event, organised by Keighley Model Railway Club, had been held at the school in Green Head Road.

More than 15 layouts were in operation – some hosted by Keighley members and others brought by clubs from as far away as Kendal and Barrow-in-Furness – covering all scales and gauges.

"It's been absolutely fantastic," said the Keighley club's publicity and marketing officer, Steve Ward.

"We're delighted with the new venue, which gives us so much more space.

"All the feedback has been very positive."

Chairman Charles Oldroyd said this year's event had placed increased emphasis on attractions for children.

There was Lego, Brio and K'Nex to play with, face painting and an interactive Lego layout.

Thomas and Friends also featured.

And rides were available on an outdoor live steam railway provided by Keighley Model Engineering Society.

Mr Oldroyd added: "It's been organised for the first time by Duncan Hunnisett and his wife Janet and while there was something for everyone, there was a greater focus on children's activities.

"The venue is excellent and the staff have bent over backwards to support us.

"We'll certainly be looking at returning to UAK next year and repeating the format.

"We had about double the number of visitors from previous years."

The event also had extensive provision for active modellers.

A wide range of traders was present, selling everything from tools and materials to books and electronics.

There were also demonstrations in paint weathering and kit building and a prize draw, with state-of-the-art digital train sets up for grabs.

The club's next event is an open day on April 30 at the clubrooms – in Keighley Business Centre, Knowle Mills, South Street – from 10am to 4.30pm.

There will be layouts in all scales and visitors will have the chance to run their own locomotives on a test track.

Admission will be £3.50 for adults and £2.50 for children. Full catering will be provided.

The club has more than 80 members but welcomes new recruits.

The rooms are open from 7pm until about 10pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 1pm to 5pm on Saturdays.
