A SPECIAL group of runners is urging people to help make a tenth-anniversary charity event a record-breaker.

Members of the Perfect 10 Club have taken part in every Keighley BigK 10K since the run and walk started.

They have now signed-up for this year's event – on Mother's Day, March 26 – and are supporting an appeal by the organising team for more people to come forward.

It is hoped the latest BigK will take the total raised over the years for Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice Manorlands to more than £300,000.

Among those lining-up for the tenth time is Debbie Spurr, whose effort to maintain a 100 per cent record has been more of a challenge than for most club colleagues.

"In 2012 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour," she said.

"I had an operation to remove the tumour in early 2013, just eight weeks before the BigK 10K.

"I didn't want to miss the event and used it as a milestone to speed my recovery.

"When I completed the run and got my T-shirt at the finish I sent it to the neurosurgeon who had operated on me at Leeds as a thank-you. I believe it is still hanging on his office wall."

She will be joined by partner Neville Whittingham, who is also clocking-up BigK number ten.

"Whether people have previously done all nine or none it would be great if we could get a record number of folk participating in this anniversary year," he said.

"The staff at Manorlands do a fantastic job and participation in these great events, such as the BigK, allows Sue Ryder to continue with its vital services in the local area."

Another ten-timer is Roy Williams.

He said: "I believe we should always live each day like it's our last.

"I've been running for 50 years and I hope it's many years before I miss the beloved Keighley BigK."

Manorlands fundraiser, Andrew Wood, thanked all the club members for their continued support.

He added: "From an initial meeting a decade ago with MP Kris Hopkins, John Dennis and council representatives, this event has become something Keighley is very proud of and the funds raised make such a difference to local people and their families.

"For our tenth anniversary we've added a 5K route so that an even larger proportion of our community can get involved."

The BigK 10K will, as in previous years, start at Victoria Park and follow a multi-terrain route around the town.

Keighley's Airedale Shopping Centre, Convenience Hire and Keighley Ford and Kia are the three main sponsors.

For more details and to sign-up for the event, visit sueryder.org/bigk10k or call the Manorlands fundraising office on 01535 640430.

Organisers would also like to hear from anyone else who is taking part for the tenth time.
