A PERSISTENT beggar has been jailed for assaulting a police community support officer by spitting in his eye.

John Graham, 50, got into an argument with two officers after refusing to leave Keighley town centre on Monday.

As one was writing out a direction to leave form, Graham deliberately spat in his face.

When the officer asked him whether he had any medical ailments, he told him he had hepatitis C.

The victim had to go into a nearby shop to get some water to flush out his eye.

Representing himself at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Graham, of no fixed abode, said he had acted “on the spur of the moment.”

The court heard he had two previous convictions for assaulting police, and district judge Richard Clews jailed him for eight weeks.
