A NEW crime-busting digital radio system is in operation across Keighley town centre.

It has replaced an old analogue network.

The new radios, funded by Keighley Business Improvement District (BID), provide a link between businesses and with town centre officers and a CCTV control room.

"They are a great step in the fight against crime," said BID manager Paul Howard.

"The radios can be used not only to catch criminals, but to prevent theft by increasing vigilance. Shopkeepers can warn the whole town centre when they spot anything suspicious.

"The previous system wasn't fully utilised because of the cost for businesses – they had to rent their radios, costing upwards of £300 a year.

"This new system is sponsored by Keighley BID, a company funded by a levy on businesses across the town centre.

"A limited number of radios are available to all BID members free of charge. As supplies are restricted, the scheme is operating on a first-come first-served basis."

Among those supporting the scheme is Ann Fitzgerald, manager of The Fragrance Shop.

She said: "The new radio is a welcome help in the fight against theft – allowing instant communication, which is vital to catch a thief before they leave the immediate area."

Businesses wishing to obtain a radio should call 01535 618085.
