A 24-HOUR table tennis marathon raised more than £1,000.

Nearly 40 juniors at Haworth Hawks took part in the sponsored event, which began at 6pm on Friday.

Proceeds will help buy scoreboards, develop umpiring at the club and kickstart a fund to support juniors becoming coaches.

Organisers said the event was a "magnificent success".

"Thirty-six juniors took part in some way – with the support of adults doing coaching, chaperone duties, donating pizzas etc," said club secretary Judith Silberberg.

"In total they managed 300 hours awake and a few more where they were there in body!

"It was wonderful seeing what can be achieved when the table tennis community comes together."

The first beneficiary of the new juniors fund, for a coaching course, will be Nathan Ward.

He has already helped with some coaching activities at the club, as well as with playing at Bradford Hawks and Parkside School in Cullingworth.

The club stages junior beginner sessions at Keighley Table Tennis Centre from 5.30pm to 7pm on Fridays.
