A WAREHOUSEMAN has been jailed for 12 months for breaking a man's cheekbone in a parking dispute.

Nicholas Sheppard repeatedly punched Michael Roberts in the face over his use of his late father's designated parking space in the middle of Haworth, Bradford Crown Court heard today.

Sheppard, 32, of Heathcliffe Mews in the village, was angered when Mr Roberts and his partner parked in the spot following the death of Mr Sheppard senior from a terminal illness.

His upset and ill-feeling came to a head when he was drinking in a pub in the centre of the village, the court was told.

When he saw Mr Roberts putting out rubbish behind his shop, Sheppard walked over to him and punched him repeatedly in the face.

Mr Roberts may need reconstructive surgery, prosecutor John Bull said. He sustained nerve damage to his face and had suffered mentally and physically.

Sheppard pleaded guilty to causing him grievous bodily harm in Main Street, Haworth, on July 11 last year.

Mark Brookes, barrister for Mr Sheppard, said that the defendant and his mother were upset when Mr Roberts and his partner parked in his late father's space following his death in May, 2015. It caused problems with the funeral hearse and when they were clearing out his home.

Sheppard was genuinely remorseful and had kept out of Mr Roberts' way since.

Judge Mark Savill said there was "plainly a background to this assault".

Sheppard said that Mr Roberts had gestured towards him with a finger across his throat and accelerated his car at him.

But the judge labelled the offence "wholly unjustified".

"You set about him in a deliberate way in drink in a repeated assault," he said.

Judge Savill made a restraining order banning Sheppard from having any contact with Mr Roberts.
