A GOVERNMENT minister has visited the spot where campaigners want a footbridge built to improve the pedestrian link between two Aire Valley communities.

Andrew Jones, the minister with responsibility for roads and highways, was shown the site on the Aire Valley Trunk Road, which lies directly between Steeton and Silsden.

He was invited by Keighley MP Kris Hopkins (Con) who started a petition calling for a footbridge in October.

Mr Hopkins' petition says the structure over the dual carriageway is needed to make it safer for pedestrians to walk between Steeton and Silsden.

Mr Jones (pictured with Mr Hopkins, who is on the right) toured the proposed footbridge site this afternoon.

He was accompanied by Mr Hopkins, Craven Ward councillor Andrew Mallinson and a senior Bradford Council engineer.

Mr Hopkins said: “I'm very grateful to Andrew Jones for coming to Steeton and Silsden to see the need for a pedestrian bridge.

"It would make a real difference to the lives of local residents, and also encourage more visitors to come to the villages because of the improved access to Steeton and Silsden Railway Station it would provide."
