A MAN was charged with drink-driving after a late night crash left a road full of damaged vehicles when a bus was in a head-on collision with a pick-up truck.

The Transdev single deck bus was travelling downhill in Haworth Road towards Haworth when the crash occurred with a black Mitsubishi LS200.

The bus then hit the rear of a parked black Mercedes-Benz which was shunted into a line of parked cars causing damage to a blue Nissan Micra, a blue Citroen Xsara, a black Audi A3 and a grey BMW 3 series.

One passenger on the bus suffered suspected chest injuries and had to be taken for treatment at Airedale General Hospital.

A 45-year-old man, who was driving the Mitsubishi, was arrested at the scene and later charged with drink-driving following the incident which took place at about 9.40pm on Thursday.

Haworth Road resident Denis Frear told how a colossal bang brought him and wife Valerie out of their home to discover a bus had crashed into his parked three-year-old Mercedes E-class.

"I thought it was an aeroplane that had come down," said Mr Frear.

"The incident had begun 20 yards up the road at the junction with Vale Mill Lane that goes to Oakworth.

"The bus then hit my car then carried on further, ending up in the middle of the triangle that divides Hebden Road, knocking down a road sign.

"The only good thing is its miracle it happened when it did and nobody was seriously injured. It was a beautiful car and it's a write off.

The Mercedes ended up skewed into the tight pathway of neighbour Jane Walton's home. Mrs Walton was watching television when her house shook at the force of the impact.

"I thought there had been an explosion," she said.

"The noise was so loud and went on for ages because first there was the bang of the bus hitting the pick up, then the sound of the bus hitting the cars and them all piling into each other. It was really very frightening and I almost did not want to open my front door."

"What we need is a mini roundabout on this junction to slow everything down."

A Transdev spokesman confirmed a passenger on the bus was taken to hospital.

“Our driver had to take evasive action to avoid a serious collision," the spokesman said.

"As a result one of our customers was taken to hospital and our driver badly shaken up. We are obviously assisting police in any way we can.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said a 45-year-old Halifax man had been charged with drink-driving in connection with the crash and released on bail pending court proceedings.
